What is Social Support Meals and Transport (SSMT)?
Accessible Living Options (ALO), Bathurst Community Transport and Bathurst Meals on Wheels Services formed a consortium to deliver a “Mobile Lunch and Social Club” to residents in the Bathurst, Rockley, Trunkey Creek, Sofala and Hill End areas.
SSMT (Mobile Lunch and Social Club) service provides an opportunity for people to build social networks within communities that they love, provide connection to people residing in Bathurst, rekindle friendships, etc. It also includes an opportunity to experience a range of speakers, enjoy a meal together and participate in a variety of activities such as craft, yoga, singing etc.
Bathurst Meals on Wheels and local restaurants provide catering for the meals. Bathurst Community transport, local transport operators and volunteers transport the participants to and from the venues.
Who is eligible to receive this service?
People who are frail aged and over 65 years residing in Bathurst, Rockley, Trunkey Creek, Sofala and Hill End.
How to refer to this service?
Anyone can refer. The person being referred must give their permission first. If the person has not given permission, the Social Support Coordinator cannot make contact with them.
The Social Support Coordinator will meet with the person to discuss their needs. A Service Agreement, Consent and Service Plan will be developed.
How is the service provided?
Participants are supported by caring volunteers who are there to assist the person engage in conversation with others and to ensure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the social experience.
Our volunteers have a variety of skills and interests and are there to support and encourage people to mix with others and meet new people.
ALO is committed to monitoring the outings being provided. This is done through phone calls, home visits and surveys. All feedback provided to ALO is valued and used to implement change within the program.
How much does it cost?
A small contribution is charged for the outings. Contributions can be negotiated and may also be reduced or waived if the person is experiencing financial difficulty. No-one is refused access to social support because of an inability to pay a contribution.
